Characterisation of Precipitates in Mg and Al Alloys using HAADF-STEM

Magnesium and aluminium alloys have gained increasing applications in the automotive, aircraft and aerospace industries. Many of these light alloys owe their high strength to nano-scale precipitates that are produced by an age hardening process. Despite the importance of the precipitates at both practical and fundamental levels, their structures have not been unambiguously established. Further improvement in alloy strength has been hindered by a lack of understanding of precipitate crystal structures and microstructural factors that are important in controlling the nucleation and growth of these precipitates. This presentation will show recent results on the characterization of precipitates using conventional transmission electron microscopy and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. It will be demonstrated that many precipitate phases in magnesium alloys are incorrectly described in the literature and that even the well-known precipitate phases in aluminium alloys in fact exhibit structural features hitherto unreported.
